My friend Jane who runs the Missouri running club for women, has always told me how much she thinks everyone should run more often. And truthfully there has been a lot said for the benefits of a run around the block but little has been acknowledged about the far reaching benefits of a long, relaxing walk. Positive side effects abound from this simple meditative activity. As we have become more modernized, the art of sharing a simple, long saunter in beautiful surroundings has gone by the wayside. What a shame and what wonderful benefits you could be missing!
When you walk over thirty minutes, your body changes gears somewhat. Instead of using glycogen for energy, the body begins to burn stored fuel or stored fat. While your body is in total continued motion, your brain responds by slowing down the thought process which allows you to de-stress and relax. Numerous health benefits are attributed to long walks including reducing LDL or the bad cholesterol while increasing HDL or the good cholesterol. It can lower your blood pressure, reduce type 2 diabetes and assist with weight management. Your aerobic capacity is improved providing increased endurance. It is evident a simple long walk can be a wonderful health booster.
Although the health and physical achievements you are striving for might not all be obtained just by walking, but it is certainly a great beginning. First of all, you just really feel better due to the increased aerobics and you certainly look better from being outdoors and exercising; however, there are still more benefits. The long power walk assists you in focusing and mastering your own body. It allows you to relax and de-stress in a calming way. Walking for a long distance need not be a fast paced race to the finish but should be about the journey. Take the time to clear your mind and think of your surroundings, not the problems you left at home or at the office.
Health spas might be unaffordable for you and gyms might not be available in your area but walking is accessible to most everyone. The extraordinary benefits of this low impact exercise far outweigh the time it will take for you to begin this incredible journey to good health, improved mental ability and increased control of your own mind and body. Start walking-who know where it will take you!
